It will be offered in three versions
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander was introduced this evening before the opening of the Chicago Auto Show. The new version of the popular Toyota Highlander 3-row SUV brings an extended wheelbase to provide more passenger space and cargo capacity than the traditional Highlander while also offering an expanded powertrain lineup and a long list of standard features. The objective of this model is to provide an even more versatile option for consumers stranded between the current Highlander and the much larger Sequoia.
The new Toyota Grand Highlander will come in three versions and offer three different powertrains. It also features the latest Toyota connectivity and safety technologies. Let’s take a closer look at the brand-new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander.
Interior space and versatility improvements
Toyota provided only some of the interior space and cargo capacity specs, so we can’t dive too deep into comparing the new Grand Highlander with the current Highlander. However, we know that the Grand Highlander will offer 2,775 L of total cargo space behind the front row seats, while the current Highlander delivers 2,379 L behind the front seats.
Moreover, Toyota says there’s room for seven carry-on suitcases behind the third row. That tells us that the Grand Highlander’s extra cargo space will be found mostly behind the third row, as the current Highlander can’t come close to that much luggage with all rows in place. Toyota also promises multiple storage areas across the cabin. The Grand Highlander’s second row can be configured as a bench seat with three seats across or a captain’s chair configuration with two separate seats.
A total of 13 cupholders will be found inside the new 2024 Grand Highlander, and there will be USB charging ports across all three rows. When configured with second-row captain’s chairs, the Grand Highlander will provide multipurpose trays while the front centre console and third row get storage areas for phones and tablets.
The 2024 Grand Highlander will come with a standard 12.3-inch centre display housing the latest generation of the Toyota Multimedia system. This new infotainment system features advanced voice command capability using the “Hey Toyota” voice command while offering over-the-air updates and cloud navigation. The traditional Toyota Connected services will also be offered, including Destination Assist to help you get directions from a live agent, emergency assistance, remote access to the vehicle through a mobile app, and the Stolen Vehicle Locator function. Wireless charging is standard up front, as are wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also an available JBL premium audio system with 11 speakers.
Three engines offered in the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will come with three powertrain options, one more than the current Highlander. The first is a standard 2.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine introduced earlier this year on the smaller Highlander that delivers 264 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
The Grand Highlander will also be offered with a 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain delivering 243 horsepower and averaging just 6.7 L per 100 km in the current Highlander. Lastly, the top-of-the-line Grand Highlander will feature the new Hybrid MAX powertrain that delivers 362 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. According to Toyota, this will allow the new Grand Highlander to reach 100 km/h in about 6.5 seconds.
The Grand Highlander will also feature a range of driving modes, including Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Snow.
