The new crossover is a plug-in hybrid only vehicle.
The 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is working with a second electric engine.
The EV range is 53 km in Canada.
It’s an understatement to say that Alfa Romeo’s new urban crossover is crucial to the brand’s survival in North America. The new Tonale will complement the Stelvio, which has been dragging the Italian division on its back for the past few years on this side of the Atlantic.
One important aspect of the new subcompact crossover’s performance will be its fuel consumption, particularly as it will only be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in North America, where the manufacturer decided a few months ago to abandon the idea of offering the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a strategy still in motion with Dodge’s own Hornet.
However, it seems that the newcomer will appeal to customers who are sensitive to their vehicle’s performance at the pump, since the EPA has just published its official fuel consumption figures, and the Tonale did better than the manufacturer’s preliminary estimates.
According to the EPA, the Alfa Romeo Tonale will be able to record an average fuel consumption of 77 MPGe, compared with Alfa Romeo’s estimate of 75 MPGe. Range will be 360 miles (or 579 km). The manufacturer had previously forecast a range of 320 miles and 30 miles in purely electric mode, for a total of 350.
In Canada, RnC (Natural Resources Canada) has also published its official fuel consumption ratings for the Tonale, the urban crossover which, according to the federal agency, would be capable of recording an average of 3.1 Le /100 km, with a possible range of 573 km, a result similar to that obtained on the American side. The electric range would be 53 km.
Let’s not forget that the small vehicle will be powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, mated to an electric motor driving the wheels on the second axle, with a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The powertrain delivers 285 hp and 347 ft-lb of torque.
