The All-New 2023 Honda HR-V is Bigger and More Powerful

Honda's small HR-V SUV grows in personality, size, and technology

  • Pricing starts at $28,730 in Canada, a $2,530 increase over the 2022 model.

  • It arrives in showrooms later this month.

  • It shares many components with the excellent 11th-generation Civic.

The first generation of North America’s Honda HR-V was introduced for the 2016 model year and was an instant hit. Based largely on the brilliant but not-so-popular Fit, it answered all demands with more space than any of its competitors. Now, for its encore, the 2023 HR-V gets a new platform and a more responsive engine.

The all-new 2023 Honda HR-V is also larger on the outside as it has grown by a considerable 221 mm over the outgoing model. It is also 70 mm wider; its track is also wider (+55 mm up front and +64 mm in the rear) and the wheelbase is 45 mm longer. While the cabin gains in volume, the trunk however is barely any larger than it previously was. Even so, the HR-V still holds the largest boot in the segment at nearly 700 litres.

Visually, the new 2023 HR-V has evolved into a far more mature and imposing SUV than its predecessor. The front fascia with its Civic-inspired grille and headlight combo looks good. From all angles, the HR-V is smoother, broader, and projects a more rugged image.

The new HR-V is built on Honda’s improved global architecture which serves as the foundation for the new Honda Civic. The SUV will feature a contemporary independent front suspension and a new multi-link rear suspension setup. In addition, steering will also be borrowed from the Civic therefore we can expect an invigorating and sporty driving experience.

The new 2023 HR-V also gets a bigger engine so it can offset its new girth with more power. From now on, it swaps the old 1.8-litre engine for the 2.0-litre already offered in the Civic. This gives it 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, up 17 hp and 11 lb-ft of torque from the previous 4-cylinder engine.

The new engine is still paired with a standard continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The latter has been updated and upgraded to better manage the extra power. Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control will be standard on the Sport and EX-L Navi models and optional on the base LX model. This system adds downhill control meaning it will keep the HR-V’s speed between 3 and 18 km/h on steep descents, so the driver can relax and enjoy the ride.

Onboard, the new small SUV gains more tech and a lovely new dashboard, once more inspired and lifted from the Civic. LX and Sport versions of the 2023 HR-V will have a 7-inch digital IP and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Moving up to the EX-L Navi trim, the touchscreen grows to 9 inches and will also feature navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and an upgraded sound system.

The FWD 2023 Honda HR-V LX is priced from $28,730, or $2,530 more than the 2022 base model. Adding AWD to the base LX increases the price to $31,030. The AWD Sport model retails for $33,930, while the loaded EX-L model costs $37,130, which represents a $2,430 bump over the 2022 model. The 2023 Honda HR-V arrives in showrooms later this month.
