The BMW i3 Will Not Get Another Generation

BMW confirmed that they have no plans to build a next-generation i3, meaning that the current-gen will probably be the last.

After the latest Frankfurt Motor Show, where BMW unveiled a lot of future vehicles and technologies, it became clear that the i3 doesn’t fit in there.

Speaking to the Financial Times Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales said, “There’s no specific plan for an i3 successor.

Nota added: “We are now bringing electrification more to the mainstream.

That being said he also specified that the German carmaker will continue to build and sell the i3 for many more years.

With the fifth generation of eDrive and the iNEXT models coming up real soon we understand the manufacturer’s decision about the BMW i3. Also, the MINI Cooper SE, the very first production EV of the brand, which had its world premiere in Frankfurt this month, is built on the same platform as the small BMW EV.

The German brand’s NUMBER ONE > NEXT corporate strategy will see a slew of electric and other zero-emission models see the light of day in the near future. The first one will be the BMW iNEXT, which will be launched in 2021.

Meanwhile, the BMW i3 sales are booming. “The i3 is actually doing extremely well in its sixth year of production already,” said Mr. Nota. With an increase in sales in August, which were 30% higher than the year before, the executive added it was a “remarkable” growth if you take the vehicle’s age into account.
