The Chevrolet Camaro Could Return as a Style-Forward Affordable EV

Chevrolet might bring back the Camaro as an electric vehicle around 2026, perhaps as a coupe-like sedan or as an SUV.

  • GM’s President wants the Camaro to go back to its roots by being more affordable.

  • The next Camaro might be a coupe-like sedan that focuses on style more than performance.

  • It seems GM is still debating turning the Camaro into an electric SUV like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

While the Chevrolet Camaro is going away after the 2024 model year, with production having already ended last December, this might not be the end for the iconic nameplate.

Indeed, General Motors’ president Mark Reuss wants to see the Camaro return as an electric car that will be more affordable than the current model, saying it could be priced similarly to the new Equinox EV.

This means that the next Camaro, which could arrive around 2026, might have a base price of around $35,000 in the United States. While this is very similar to the entry price of the current model, an electric Camaro would likely be eligible for government incentives that could make it significantly more affordable.

In addition, the next Camaro could shift its focus away from pure performance and horsepower to revolve more around style and driving dynamics.

Another major difference with the previous models is that the next vehicle to wear the Camaro badge might not be a coupe.

The main theory is that the new Chevrolet sports car could become a coupe-like sedan that would take the place of both the Camaro and the Malibu, which is also being phased out at the moment.

Another possibility is that the nameplate could be applied to an electric SUV in order to capitalize on the name’s recognition on a vehicle that has a higher sales potential than a sedan.

Of course, this is what Ford has done with the Mustang Mach-E, and many fans of the original pony car are not happy about it. Chevrolet is no doubt considering this when deciding what to do with the Camaro EV.

Interestingly, there are rumours that Ford is working on a gasoline-powered Mustang sedan and Dodge will soon offer coupe and sedan versions of its new Charger with both combustion and electric drivetrains, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if Chevrolet wants a part of that segment.

Making the next Camaro into a high-style, affordable sporty model would take it back to the basics of the first generation, which was intended to attract younger buyers with its appearance and price tag.

It will be interesting to hear about new details of this project in the coming months or years.
