The Electric Volkswagen ID.R Crushes Old Electric Lap Record Of The Nürburgring

The electric Volkswagen ID.R bests the previous one lap record of the Nürburgring Nordschleife by an incredible 40 seconds.

In the car business, testing and proving new products on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is an achievement and something to boast about. Some may think that a Nürburgring lap time is irrelevant but anyone need only keep an eye on how often the track comes up in sporty- and performance-car press releases.

One of the latest to use the Nürburgring’s notorious reputation as being the toughest track on Earth is Volkswagen. They recently took their all-electric ID.R, the same car that demolished the Pikes Peak record last year, to the Green Hell.

The one lap record was crushed that day and now stands at 6:05.336. The previous record time was set in 2017 by the Nio EP9, or 40 seconds faster… What’s perhaps most impressive is that the Nio sports a 1,341-horsepower (1,000 kW).four-motor powertrain design. The little old VW manages with only 680 horsepower (500 kW) …

There is a huge difference between the two where the Volkswagen ID.R is a purpose-built race car and the other isn’t. Still.

Here’s a video on the one lap record. It’s worth your time if you’re a fan of one lap record attempts of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
