The Infiniti Q70 flagship luxury sedan will be discontinued which is sad, but not a surprise
Sales of new Infiniti vehicles have demonstrated a few things over the last few years. For one, their best-seller has been the QX60 midsize 3-row SUV. In fact, it outsold all Infiniti sedans by a by more than a 2-1 margin last September. Two, Infiniti needs more SUVs people want if they want to survive in the near future.
Sedans have taken a backseat to SUVs for most automakers but the Infiniti Q70 never managed to crack the segment in which it was meant to do battle. Depending on pricing or size, the Q70 squeezed itself between the Mercedes-Benz E- and S-Class and the BMW 5 and 7 Series. To say the Q70 had a tough job on its hands is an understatement.
This is not to say that the car was not worthy of its position. Available with a 330-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 or a 416-horsepower 5.6-litre V8 with a long wheelbase, the car was big on luxury features and creature comforts. It was also old with its platform dating back to 2001.
The numbers simply did not add up for Infiniti to invest in an updated Q70. The large luxury Infiniti sedan’s future lies somewhere in the Q Inspiration concept revealed at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. We shall see.
