The Kia Soul takes its final bow, RIP 2009–2025

After a colourful 16-year run on the Canadian market, the Kia Soul is bowing out of North America, 2025 marks its final chapter.

  • The Kia Soul was one of the last survivors of the urban-cube craze

  • Three generations were produced over its lifespan

  • In Quebec, sales dropped from 930 units in 2023 to 609 in 2024

The Kia Soul, one of the South Korean brand’s most distinctive and divisive models, is officially taking its curtain call. This friendly little box on wheels played a key role in improving Kia’s reputation with consumers. The automaker confirmed that 2025 will be the Soul’s final model year, with production ending this month. A handful of units remain on dealer lots for those who want to own a final piece of Kia history.

A Journey That Began in 2009

The story actually started in 2006 with the first Soul concept, followed by the production debut in 2009, a pivotal moment for Kia. Designed as a direct response to vehicles like the Scion xB and Nissan Cube, the Soul stood out as an unconventional “box on wheels.” Sitting somewhere between a compact car and a small crossover, its tall stance, upright driving position, and roomy interior quickly appealed to a broader and older audience than Kia had initially targeted.

Three Generations and Many Variants

Over 16 years, the Soul evolved through three generations and a variety of distinctive versions:
• Soul EV (Electric): Launched in 2014, it became one of Kia’s first mainstream EVs, paving the way for the Niro EV and EV6.
• Soul Sport and GT-Line: These sportier trims, sometimes turbo-powered, brought extra performance and style.
• Visionary Concepts: Show cars like the Soul’ster (a fun convertible with a beach vibe from 2009) and the Track’ster (a two-door performance concept revealed in 2012) highlighted the platform’s versatility and Kia’s creative ambition.

A Marketing Icon

It’s impossible to talk about the Soul without mentioning its legendary ad campaign featuring the dancing hamsters. Loved by some and loathed by others, these animated mascots became cultural icons. During their era, Kia’s U.S. sales tripled, transforming the brand from a budget alternative into a mainstream player. In Canada, especially in Quebec, the Soul found notable success, though limited supply in recent years caused sales to plummet (930 units in 2023 versus 609 in 2024).

A Farewell with Honours

With more than 1.5 million units sold in the United States alone, the Kia Soul leaves behind a unique legacy. Quirky, affordable, and proudly non-conformist, it symbolized Kia’s transformation into a modern and confident brand. As production ends in 2025, the most likable little cube on the road takes its final bow, but its influence on automotive culture and urban streets worldwide will endure.

Looking Ahead

Kia may be saying goodbye to the Soul, but it’s not leaving a void. Coming soon is the Kia K4 hatchback for gas-powered buyers, while the EV3,  a compact electric SUV, is set to arrive in 2026, continuing the brand’s playful and innovative spirit in a new form.
