The Lucid Air Sapphire Becomes the Most Powerful Sedan in the World

Lucid unveiled the Air Sapphire, the most powerful version of its Air electric sedan.

The small American manufacturer Lucid Motors has not finished surprising us. The new player in the pure electric segment took advantage of its presence at Car Week in Monterey, California to unveil the new variant of its Air sedan.

Called Lucid Air Sapphire, the new variant relies mainly on its enhanced performance level to impress the gallery. With three motors (one in the front and two in the back), the sedan comes out of the company’s workshops with an estimated 1,200 horsepower, which puts the new livery at the top of the sedan segment in any category. The time needed to go from 0-96 km/h is said to be under two seconds, while 0-161 km/h would require less than four seconds. Want more? The quarter-mile would take less than nine seconds and the top speed would be over 321 km/h.

The sedan’s three motors take advantage of Lucid’s microjet stator cooling and corrugated winding. The rear engine tandem also comes with new heat exchanger technology and higher coolant flow. What’s more, the battery pack is also upgraded for higher power and more precise thermal logic. The dual rear-wheel drive also allowed engineers to incorporate torque vectoring, which improves the capabilities of the all-wheel drive. For example, the dual rear-wheel drive can effectively rotate the rear of the vehicle, providing torque to the rear wheels in opposite directions to promote stability in turns or in a straight line, similar to a rear-wheel steering and brake-based configuration, but faster, quieter and more transparent. In tight turns, the system is able to apply regenerative braking to the inside wheel while powering the outside wheel, which dramatically improves vehicle rotation and allows for much faster response times than rear-wheel steering systems.

Good news for consumers who will opt for this hyper-powerful sedan, the braking system has been optimized with carbon-ceramic discs. The Lucid Air Sapphire also features stiffer front and rear springs, unique shock absorber settings, stiffer bushings, and unique tuning for ABS, traction, stability control and electronic power steering. Not surprisingly, the wheels and tires are widened to keep the user on the road. The 20-inch and 21-inch wheels at the rear are unique to the Sapphire edition, while the Michelin PS4S tires. Those with a keen eye may have noticed that the wheels also come with removable carbon fibre hubcaps, a little trick that further improves the car’s aerodynamics.

On the outside, the sedan has been reworked with more aerodynamic support, which stabilizes the car even more at high speeds. The launch of the Sapphire edition was also accompanied by the unveiling of the new Sapphire colour, exclusive to this livery. The first examples of this high-performance livery will be painted in this beautiful blue colour.

Inside, a new Sapphire Mojave ambiance adds new 18-way adjustable sport seats with leather, Alcantara suede and blue stitching with an integrated heating, ventilation and massage system.

The Sapphire edition will be limited and for those interested in the new version, it will be possible to reserve a copy starting Tuesday, August 23 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The starting price will be $249,000 US or $325,000 Canadian.
