The New 2027 Chevrolet Bolt Will Not Be Assembled Beyond 2028

General Motors made it clear some time ago: the “new” Chevrolet Bolt 2027 would only return as a transitional model. We now know that this transition will last just two years, with production ending as early as 2028.

  • The Bolt 2027 Shares Components with the Equinox EV
  • Production at the Kansas Plant Will End in 2028

It truly was a short-lived comeback. From the moment its return was announced, GM management emphasized that the Bolt’s reintroduction would be temporary. The goal was to correct the mistake of discontinuing the model in 2023, but above all to once again offer a more affordable entry-level electric vehicle.

While the design remains evolutionary, GM took the time to modernize the car, as highlighted in the road test by our journalist Anthony Lemonde. The vehicle addresses several of its previous shortcomings, notably with the adoption of a new battery, increased driving range, and—most importantly—improved charging capability.

Thanks to these upgrades, the Bolt now positions itself against serious competition such as the new Toyota C-HR and Subaru Uncharted duo, the Nissan LEAF as well as the Kia EV4. All of these models stand out for their similar size and base pricing under $50,000.

From China to Kansas

It was clear from the outset that the lifespan of the “new” Bolt would be limited. We now know exactly when the axe will fall again: 2028. The Fairfax Assembly plant, located in Kansas and responsible for building the Bolt, will see its role change in 2028. It will instead take on production of the Buick Envision and the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox.

In the case of Buick, this move represents a relocation of production from China to the United States in order to counter the impact of tariffs.

The current generation will therefore cover only the 2027 and 2028 model years. For now, there has been no official word regarding a successor to the Bolt. Will there be a new generation, or will the model once again be discontinued? Time will tell.
