Initially, Canada was to receive the Golf, but not the US.
Like the US, only the GTI and Golf R will be available for 2022.
The current uncertain economic climate would be the main reason.
From the onset, or nearly, the all-new 8th generation Volkswagen Golf was confirmed for Canada. At the time, the US was only to get the sporty versions, namely the Golf GTI and Golf R.
Volkswagen Canada has confirmed to the Guide de l’auto that this will no longer be the case. When the car was revealed to the world last October, Volkswagen Canada quickly shared that we could expect the new Golf sometime in the 2022 calendar year.
Things have changed as Volkswagen bosses in Germany have decided that the current economic context could not support nor justify selling the Golf in Canada. In 2019, just shy of 20,000 Golfs, Sportwagens, GTIs, and Rs were delivered in the country. With the number expected to drop in the future in favour of SUVs including the Tiguan, the business plan ran out of steam.
Volkswagen Canada’s PR Manager, Thomas Tetzlaff, confirmed that there will be no VW Golf in 2022 despite their ardent desire to get it. He also hinted that there’s little chance it will ever come in the future.
The 2021 Volkswagen Golf will continue to be offered for sale, as will the GTI. As we know, the brilliant Sportwagen and Golf R are no more.
