The 2027 GR Supra will be developed in-house by Toyota.
A 2,0L turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine is the most likely powertrain for this upcoming model.
Production of the current GR Supra should end later in 2025.
Toyota is working on the next generation of its GR Supra sports car, and unlike for the current model, it is doing everything on its own.
Indeed, reports from Japan’s Best Car magazine indicate the automaker has ended its ties with BMW, which participated heavily in the development of the fifth-generation model that marked the return of the Supra nameplate after a 17-year hiatus.
While Toyota’s sports car enjoyed much more success than the closely related BMW Z4, it seems the Japanese company wasn’t entirely satisfied with its partner from Germany.
Unsurprisingly, early reports say the next Supra will keep with tradition by being built on a dedicated rear-wheel drive platform, but enthusiasts can expect a significant change under the hood.

Indeed, since BMW supplies the 3,0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder found in the current model, the end of the partnership also means a new engine has to be found.
Best Car magazine claims the most likely powertrain for the 2027 GR Supra will be a new Toyota-built 2,0L turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine. Power output is expected to remain similar, at 400 horsepower, but the future of the manual transmission remains uncertain, as it is rarely used as part of electrified powertrains.
Another rumour might please Supra fans, as it hints at the inline-six configuration remaining under hood.
Instead of BMW, some speculate that Toyota will turn to Mazda and borrow its new 3,3L mild-hybrid turbo inline-six for the Supra.

Lending credibility to this theory is the fact that both automakers already share powertrains (Mazda’s CX-50 hybrid is powered by the RAV4’s hybrid system) and operate a factory together in Alabama.
On the other hand, the Mazda 3,3L engine is significantly heavier than the four-cylinder hybrid setup would be, so that could be a factor against its implementation.
As of now, nothing has been confirmed by Toyota, so we can only speculate and hope for the best.
More details should be revealed in the coming months, as the current Supra is expected to be retired by the end of the year and the new one should be revealed either for the 2027 model year or during calendar year 2027.
