The concept unveiled in March gives a clear idea of this future model’s design.
Details about the mechanical aspects of the EV5 are expected with the launch of the production model.
Chinese buyers are expected to receive the first units by the end of the year.
Kia unveiled two new electric SUVs in quick succession earlier this year, the EV9 and the EV5 Concept.
While the EV9 has already been shown in production version and orders have begun to be taken, the EV5 is still only a concept that shows what to expect from the design of this model.
This will soon change, however, since Kia will launch the final version of the new EV5 later this month at the Chengdu Motor Show, in China.
Judging by the concept, this model will look very similar to the larger EV9, but its size should place it as an electric counterpart of the Sportage while the EV9 is billed as a companion to the Telluride.
As stated before, we don’t know much about the EV5 for now in terms of technical details, but it is likely to share the E-GMP platform with the existing EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5, which would give it access to an 800-volt architecture and 350 kW max charging rates.
While Kia included a few interior pictures in its documentation for the EV5 concept, the cabin they show belongs clearly in a concept and not a production model, which means significant changes are likely to occur ahead of the launch of the final version.
One thing that will probably make it to customer vehicles is the large panel that integrates both the driver information and infotainment screens at the top of the dashboard since this feature is a hallmark of many new Kia vehicles currently on the market.
The automaker has yet to confirm that this model will be sold in North America, but we know China will be one of the main markets for the EV5 since deliveries are expected to begin there before the end of the year.
Other world markets will likely have to wait a few more months before customers can drive away from the dealership in their new EV5.
