That’s performance both on- and off-road.
This is in part possible thanks to the R1T’s quad motor setup.
What the R1T does in this video almost does not seem possible.
This video from Rivian is only 2 minutes 20 seconds long but it’s as adrenaline-pumping as the 7-minute car chase in Ronin. It’s almost difficult to believe that we are watching a large pickup being pushed this hard on various surfaces.
This is the final video in the desert testing series from Rivian it is most telling. The incredible footage we see is a direct result of Rivian engineers not making any compromises when it comes to on- or off-road performance. The portions of the video where we see the R1T rotating around a corner are mesmerizing. Thanks to the quad-motor setup, torque vectoring, and air suspension, all the R1T’s elements work together to give the truck almost limitless capability.
Although the testing looks like fun, actual development work is involved. These tests are done to further develop Rivian’s in-house inverters (one per axle), power delivery and cooling of the battery, among other key points. New software is being added that will enable the vehicle to recognize what terrain it’s on and arrange various drive settings for the conditions.
