Might wagons make a comeback with the dawn of EVs?
A few automakers have teased station wagon EVs.
Volvo and Polestar, both under the Geely umbrella, should seriously consider looking into the Swedish automaker’s past for design inspiration. Volvo has said that there will be more SUVs in the future, at the expense of wagons we assume, but this could be an opportunity for Polestar to take the lead and create a new-old fad.
Already Polestar has shown that their design approach, though inspired by Volvo, is fairly unique. The Polestar 2 is a cross between a crossover and a sedan so why not take it to the next level and make it a cross-wagon too? The Polestar 3 will satisfy SUV buyers so that’s covered.
And as far as inspiration is concerned, this rendering prepared by SRK Designs could and should serve as a guideline. Everything up to the “C” pilar is essentially standard Polestar 2 sedan thanks to the CUV’s upright rear quarters. From there, the rendering simply suggests extending the roofline by 60- or 70cm and merging it to the vertical portion of the sedan’s trunk lid with a piece of glass.
We know transforming the Polestar 2 into a wagon will require far more work than this, but we’re convinced it would be worth it. Like the famously misquoted line from the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams:” “If you build it, he will come,” we think if Polestar builds a 2 Wagon, buyers will come.
