The redesigned Ford F-150 packs technology that improve efficiency, capability, and productivity
PowerBoost and active aerodynamics improve efficiency
More safety and connectivity technology as well
The 2021 Ford F-150 didn’t need to go all out like this. Ford could have simply changed the design inside and out, add a few active safety technologies, maybe make the tailgate fold differently, and call it a day. The F-150 has been the best-selling truck in North America for over four decades, and its crown wasn’t in danger.
But Ford decided to act like it’s top spot was up for grabs, offering up a redesigned F-150 that is packed with new features. Ford has set the bar for what a new truck should offer and at the risk of sounding too giddy, the new F-150 is impressive. Here are 10 new features found in the 2021 Ford F-150 that stand out.
3.5-litre PowerBoost Hybrid V6
There will be six engines offered in the 2021 Ford F-150 lineup, but the newest addition is the 3.5-litre PowerBoost Hybrid V6 engine. Capable of towing at minimum 12,000 pounds (official numbers will come later), the PowerBoost hybrid is available on every trim. The hybrid engine combines the EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic and a 35-kW electric motor that adds 47 horsepower. The electric motor is integrated into the transmission and powered by a 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery.
Pro Power Onboard
The Pro Power Onboard system is like a personal generator integrated into the new F-150. The system has a 2.0-kW output on most F-150s while the F-150 with the PowerBoost Hybrid V6 can push the output to 7.2 kW. In other words, you can plug up to four 120-volt outlets or a 240-volt, 30 amp outlet in the back of your F-150’s bed.
Trailer Reverse Guidance
Offered already on the Ford Super Duty, Trailer Reverse Guidance uses high-resolution cameras to help couple the F-150 to a trailer. The system also provides graphics that help users maneuver the steering wheel.
Max Recline Seats
In between jobs, Max Recline Seats can fold down to nearly 180 degrees to provide plenty of relaxation.
Work Surface
The Work Surface can be found on the tailgate in the back where users will find an integrated ruler, cupholder, and mobile device holder. That said, the most impressive part Work Surface system can be found inside where a large table can expand while the gear shift lever folds into the centre tunnel.
12-inch available centre touchscreen and digital gauge cluster
Offered on XLT High Series models and above, a new 12-inch centre touchscreen is by far the largest horizontal screen in the full-size pickup segment. The screen can be split so two users can access different functions. An 8-inch screen is standard on XL and standard XLT models. There’s also an available 12-inch digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel.
Over-the-air updates
It had been widely reported that OTA updates were coming to the new Ford F-150. These updates can improve or add functionality over the life of the truck, a la Tesla.
SYNC 4
The new SYNC 4 infotainment system is standard and features wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Active aerodynamics
The 2021 F-150 features active grille shutters, active air dam, and a redesigned cab and tailgate to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption.
Active Drive Assist
Active Drive Assist is part of a host of new active safety technologies found on the 2021 Ford F-150 and its new Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 system. Active Drive Assist is the most interesting as it allows hands-free driving on the highway in both the US and Canada. Again, the F-150 is almost Tesla-like in its technology.
