45 years of Toyota Supra means 45 special cars
Add-ons include adjustable wing, new graphics, orange
To celebrate 45 years of Supra, Toyota is launching a very special and highly limited Anniversary Edition. The car will come only in Plasma Orange and will be limited to just 45 cars.
Forgetting about the decade or so when the Supra name lay dormant, the car has been around since 1978. That’s when Toyota launched the Celica Supra, with the first heading to North America in early 1979.
The Celica Supra was a stretched Celica that got an inline six instead of the Celica’s four-cylinder. In 1981 a second-gen car was launched, and it was once again a Celica with different styling and a six-cylinder engine.
Toyota launched the third-gen in 1986 and it was now unrelated to the newly front-drive Celica. This was a real sports car, and eventually, Toyota launched a 231 hp turbo model.
The fourth-gen Supra was the real icon, the 1990s supercar that made 276 hp in twin-turbo form and became impossible to get once The Fast and The Furious brought it to the screen.
Toyota’s 45th Anniversary Edition GR Supra starts with that Plasma Orange paintwork, but there’s plenty more to it. The car gets matte-black 19-inch wheels and a special black Supra graphic. It will have Gazoo Racing strut tower braces that are finished in matching orange, too.
The rear spoiler is adjustable. A screw lets the driver change the angle of attack to adjust how much downforce is being applied to the rear wheels.
All 45th Anniversary Toyota GR Supra cars will be powered by the 382 hp 3.0L inline six and they’ll all have manual transmissions. Expect them to hit dealers this fall, with pricing to be announced.
