Toyota Drops Legendary Land Cruiser From US Lineup

After more than 60 years, the Toyota Land Cruiser bows out of the US market, but all is not lost


  • It will possibly be replaced by a Lexus off-roader.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the most recognized and revered dedicated off-road vehicles in the world. It’s up there with the likes of the Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz G Wagen, and the Jeep Wrangler. Unfortunately, after 63 years of steady and reliable service, the Land Cruiser will be discontinued.

Indeed, the 2021 model year will be the Land Cruiser’s last in the US however not all is lost. The big Toyota SUV’s demise was discovered at the very end of December but this piece of news, as shared by Automotive News (subscription required) states that it might return sooner rather than later.

“The Toyota Land Cruiser has been a legendary name for more than 60 years,” Toyota Motor North America said in a statement. “While it will be discontinued in the United States after the 2021 model year, we remain committed to the large-SUV segment and will continue to explore future products that celebrate the Land Cruiser’s rich off-road history. We encourage loyal enthusiasts and intrepid adventurers to stay tuned for future developments.”

According to the source story, the Land Cruiser’s spiritual successor may return as a Lexus product. Interest in off-road vehicles increased in popularity last year which likely means that the market will not be without a dedicated off-roader for very long.
