Toyota Teases 2022 Tacoma Tweaks

Taco Tuesday Teaser

  • New wheels, new paint, for TRD model

  • Is this our first look at a heritage-style Tacoma?

Toyota is teasing its plans for the 2022 Tacoma on its social media accounts, giving us a bit of a look at what is in store for the perenially cool pickup. It looks like the brand is going retro, and is adding another brilliant shade to its line of TRD paint colours.

The Tweet reads “with over 25 years of heritage and capability, sometimes you have to reflect on where you’ve been to know where you’re going.” The Toyota Tacoma first went on sale in 1995, replacing the Toyota Pickup and becoming a legend in the compact truck marketplace. The wheels and tires seen in the teaser look delightfully retro, but what is actually going on here?

While it’s the same wheel on both, the one on the left is a bronze shade and has a classic Toyota-lettered center cap. Wearing Lunar Grey paintwork that was specific to the TRD models for 2021, this could be a heritage-style model that adds some retro Tacoma, Pickup, or even Land Cruiser cues.

On the right is the TRD logo that is the signature of the TRD Pro model, finished in a dark grey. Look up, though, and see a new eye-searing highlighter yellow paint that would be new to the Taco and would do a great job of being 2022’s signature TRD paint shade. As a bonus, it wasn’t already available on a lowly RAV4.

Look into the wheel wells of what we assume is the TRD truck and you can see the red springs that are another hallmark of the truck.

Toyota’s not known for making big changes to the Tacoma. Ever. These minor appearance tweaks are much more in line with what we’d expect. So when will Toyota show us the whole 2022 Tacoma? Expect it in the next few months, maybe even sooner.
