Trump Signals Elon Musk to Step Down from Government Role at DOGE

Elon Musk’s formal White House tenure to end by June, following internal concerns and political backlash.

  • Trump insiders say Elon Musk will exit as special government employee in late May or June.

  • Musk’s departure follows GOP concerns over his unpredictability and impact on upcoming midterms.

  • Musk expected to maintain informal role despite stepping back from active government responsibilities.

According to three individuals familiar with the discussions, President Donald Trump has informed senior aides and Cabinet officials that Elon Musk will soon step back from his current role in the administration. The move comes as Musk’s 130-day appointment as a special government employee is set to expire in late May or early June.

Musk, who has served as the public face of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is expected to transition into a less visible advisory role. One administration official confirmed that Trump addressed the planned departure Musk will likely remain a presence around the White House, but his day-to-day responsibilities are expected to diminish.

The decision follows mounting concerns among Trump allies that Musk has become a political liability. The billionaire’s public commentary has often clashed with official administration messaging and drawn criticism from both within and outside the government. Trump, who has publicly praised Musk and highlighted DOGE’s efforts to identify waste in federal agencies, has nonetheless begun preparing for a transition.

Internally, several administration officials have expressed frustration over Musk’s unilateral actions, including surprise announcements and spending cuts that bypassed Cabinet secretaries. These actions, combined with controversial public statements — such as calling Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time” — have complicated White House efforts to manage communications and policy.

Though the president has not ruled out future collaboration with Musk, administration officials confirmed that the end of his term as a special government employee will also mark the conclusion of his formal role in the administration.

It will be interesting to see if this has any positive impact on Tesla.
