Vonnen Performance can swap your Porsche 911, Cayman or Boxster’s flywheel for an electric motor and in the process convert it into a hybrid vehicle. A battery pack is added to the trunk to supply power to the electric unit.
In other words, the folks at Vonnen Performance must have gotten tired of all the rumors swirling around regarding the upcoming 911 Hybrid, and thus decided to take matters into their own hands. The system will fit any 911, Boxster or Cayman from 2012 to 2016.
Vonnen’s hybrid system links to the vehicle’s ECU and monitors RPM, speed, and throttle in order to determine when the electric motor needs to spring into action. If more power is needed, for example, the electric unit will supply power to another engine on the crankshaft and increase rotational force.
This translates into an additional 175 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque which more than compensates for the additional 120 pounds the system tacks on to your Porsche.
There is a cost to all of this and it’s not minimal: $75,000 US. You could get a brand new 718 for that kind of money, even a base 911 Carrera. Also, you have to figure that most Porsche dealerships will be scratching their heads should you need to bring in your Vonnen Porsche for service.
On the other hand, this is a pretty cool way to stand out at your next Cars and Coffee. Check out Road and Track for more information on the Vonnen hybrid performance system.
