Is Porsche working on a two-door Panamera Coupe with a possible Convertible to follow?
That’s certainly the word around the campfire, or at least according to Autocar which reports that a Porsche Panamera Coupe and Convertible are indeed in the works. They would compete with the BMW 8-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and cabrio and could arrive as early as 2020.
We wouldn’t put it past Porsche to build a two-door Panamera. Porsche has been expanding its nameplate lineups in recent years with the Panamera Sport Turismo and more recently the Porsche Cayenne Coupe a few weeks ago. Adding a two-door variant with a convertible to follow would further upset purists, but it would make sense commercially.
Both the Panamera Coupe and Convertible would ride on a shortened four-door Panamera platform. The model would essentially be a new generation of the Porsche 928 which was sold from 1977 to 1995. The 928 was a coupe with a more grand touring personality compared to the 911.
A new Porsche Panamera Coupe would certainly be more of a GT than the Porsche 911 with more space and a more pronounced focus on comfort. We can also expect more rear passenger room.
If we do see a Panamera Coupe and Cabriolet, it will likely be at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, or perhaps the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
