Subaru has plans to unveil two hybrid engines called e-boxer at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show.
We don’t know which Subaru models will get the e-boxer hybrid engines down the line and so far, the big deal being made is that these will be the first Subaru hybrid vehicles designed for the European market.
Subaru has been tentatively exploring hybrid models for a few years now with the Subaru Crosstrek being the usual guinea pig. The brand has also been promoting its PZEV technology which reduces and even eliminates emissions.
But PZEV isn’t that remarkable or exclusive of a technology and its last couple hybrid models didn’t fare so well. The fact of the matter is that Subaru is late when it comes to hybrids.
These two new e-boxer engines may help the brand catch up. As stated previously, we have no idea which models will be shown in Geneva with the e-boxer engines, but the Subaru Forester is a very real possibility.
A Forester e-boxer was unveiled at the Signapore Auto Show earlier in the year. According to British site Auto Express, that model had a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a 13-hp electric motor for a total of 156 horsepower.
No word yet on any potential plug-in hybrid powertrains or whether or not the Forester e-boxer is one of the models we will see at the Geneva Auto Show. We will be there to bring you all the coverage, so stay tuned.
