This review is another example of how expectations and reality oftentimes work against each other. In this instance, I expected the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 tires fitted to my Kia EV9 to do well, but little more. Why? For the simple, partially biased reason that Uniroyal makes good, affordable tires. Compared to top-tier tire makers like Michelin, Bridgestone, and Goodyear, to name a few, Uniroyal does not hold the same clout or reputation. And that’s just fine.

However, they do have a reputation for longevity and being a trustworthy brand. They also offer satisfying performance for an incredibly low price. In fact, the exact tested P255/55R20 Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 tires reviewed were some of the least expensive tires in this size, as confirmed by my long-standing favourite tire shop, Talon Tire.

Next to impossible to beat for the price

The Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 plowed effortlessly navigated through snow, something which we got loads of in late February and the first half of March. Over a three-day period, over 70 cm of the white stuff fell to the ground. Unimpressed, the Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4-shod EV9 went about its daily business.

As you can see in some of the images, the open V-shaped tread design and grooves along the center rib hold next to no slush and snow, meaning that the tread blocks are more capable of meeting the road surface without interference. These same grooves evacuate water when a thaw transforms ice and snow into watery roads.

The inevitable freeze after the thaw is met with generous flexibility at low temperatures thanks to the Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4’s winter compound. Most will agree that optimal grip on ice is what’s most important in a winter tire. Braking performance and distances were perfectly reasonable on ice, thanks to the tire’s highly siped structure.

The added bonus of lower rolling resistance is particularly appealing for EV owners, as it contributes to maintaining range or minimizing the effects of cold weather and driving conditions on range. Finally, I was concerned about noise from the Ice & Snow tires. Again, another highly relevant point for EV drivers is NVH penetrating the typically silent and serene cabin. I was happy to notice scarcely more road noise than with the standard Kumho all-season tires.

On dry roads, the Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 fares well; however steering feel (though there’s already little to speak of in the EV9) is further dulled. The same comment can be made for overall handling in more clement conditions. This is certainly not a deal-breaker.

A Budget-Friendly Winter Tire That Delivers

The Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 is a strong contender for drivers seeking a dependable and cost-effective winter tire. Truthfully, the value proposition and performance make me wonder why some would select lesser-known brands and pay the same price for what are generally poorer-performing tires.

With a broad selection of sizes, from wheel sizes varying from 15- to 20 inches, the Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 caters to a wide variety of vehicles, making it accessible for many drivers facing Canadian winters.

If you’re in the market for winter tires that won’t break the bank while still offering reliable performance, the Tiger Paw Ice & Snow 4 is worth considering.
