Volkswagen Brings GTI Clubsport to Nurburgring 24h

Get ready for quickest front-drive Golf

  • CS will be most powerful front-drive Golf

  • Debuts along with a host of GTI racecars

It’s our best look yet at what will be the most powerful front-drive Golf ever built. The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport is being revealed on May 31 at the Nurburgring 24 Hours Race.

The Clubsport will be more than just a sticker-clad GTI, though the cyber wrap the car (and its racer siblings) is wearing for the tease is pretty cool. We can see a new front fascia and new headlights, a big new roof spoiler and new taillights, and new 19-inch wheels.

We don’t know exactly how much power the GTI Clubsport will make yet, though it will have to be more than 241 hp to meet Volkswagen’s claim. We’re obviously hoping fo the 343 hp that the race car makes from its 2.0L, though that’s definitely not going to happen. Especially since the racer uses E20 gasoline.

The Clubsport GTI will get an electronic front diff and suspension upgrades to make it a sharper steer than standard GTIs. It will also come with a new drive mode designed specifically for the Nordschleife. Volkswagen says it “matches systems relevant for driving dynamics to the special track characteristics of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.” It’s bumpy by racetrack standards, so expect the mode to be firm but compliant.

While we’ll have to wait seven more days for the full reveal, we can drool over the Clubsport model now. Along with the GTI Clubsport 24 racer and some super-cool race-ready versions of the original Mk 1 Golf GTI.
