Volkswagen Canada Shuts its Website Down for Earth Day

Volkswagen Canada’s #DayToZero Earth Day strategy is unique, and you can effortlessly participate

  • The temporary website will generate 93% less CO2 emissions than the regular site.

  • As a bonus, for every visit to the site, VW Canada will plant a tree.

As they say: Every little step counts. Volkswagen Canada has taken a small step but one that will have a greater impact if we all simply visit

Volkswagen Canada has decided to shut down its website and replace it with a simple text-based, carbon-efficient page that will generate an estimated 93% less CO2. While that’s a bold move, something VW USA has not done, Volkswagen still wants you to head over to their site.

For every visit, Volkswagen will plant a tree. And their goal is 100,000 trees. The best thing you might do today is head over to and help plant a tree.

“As part of our Be The Change platform, we have goals to be a fully carbon-neutral company by 2050, and on our journey to get there, we know that every action counts,” said Lynne Piette, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen Canada. “So, this Earth Day we’re powering down our entire site to raise awareness about the Internet’s digital carbon footprint, while also reducing ours—and planting a tree on Canadian soil for every visit on the day to maximize our offsets.”
