Diess answers Redditor questions in AMA
Talks about company’s EV future, possible Electric Bug
The CEO of Volkswagen Group confirmed updates for the Volkswagen ID.4 EV in a very unusual way earlier today. The news of a major over the air improvement including new features and gaster charging came through a Reddit AMA that was originally scheduled for February 14th.
“We will have a major OTA update for the ID.4 coming this summer, which will add features like Plug&Charge and AutoHold, as well as a higher capacity onboard charge capability,” said Herbert Diess, VW Group CEO.
Plug and Charge is a way of automating payment for EV charging. Currently, most automakers and most charge points require an app for each network as well as an account for each. With Plug and Charge, the vehicle speaks with compatible charging stations and handles login and payment without user input.
Diess also said that Volkswagen was working to become self-sufficient in car software. That will include growth (VW hired 1,000 software engineers last year), as well as acquisitions of IP and tech companies.
What about an ID. Beetle? “Our most emotional car in our history is definitely the micro bus,” said Diess. “This was my first priority to bring this icon back to life. But yes, many other emotional cars are possible on our scalable MEB platform.”
Diess confirmed that VW is working on electric cars for “around 20k euros” ($23,000 USD) for entry segments. He also said to watch Audi and Bentley for electric premium sedans, though the latter will come as no surprise. He said that there were no plans for Skoda to expand to the U.S., with the brand’s capacities already fully utilized elsewhere.
Oh, and Diess’s favourite cheese? “Manchego. I am Spanish by heart.” It is “Ask me anything,” after all.
