Volkswagen Could Build Electric Bronco-Fighter: Report

  • Production ID Ruggdzz still possible on Amarok chassis

  • Volkswagen still pursuing compact truck electrification

Volkswagen‘s new Amarok small pickup shares its frame with the upcoming global version of the Ford Ranger. A new report says that VW is looking at electrifying this pickup platform, with rumours of an electric 4×4 SUV based on those bones.

The rugged electric off-roader would be called the ID Ruggdzz, according to Autocar, which spoke with VW commercial vehicles CEO Carsten Intra last month.

According to the report, Intra confirmed that the company was working on electrifying the Ford platform, helping it fit batteries and electric motors. “We’re looking at it together with Ford,” he said. “It’s still on the agenda.”

Though Intra wouldn’t confirm plans for the SUV, Autocar says that VW has been looking at building the ID Ruggdzz or something similar based on the platform. The ID Ruggdzz is an electric 4×4 concept that VW showed off in 2019, though it never had a public reveal.

When the concept car was introduced, VW’s then CEO said that it was meant as a rival to possible electric versions of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. It was originally planned for production this year, but was pushed back as VW made big changes to its EV plans in late 2020.
