Volkswagen Enthusiast Fleet Returns, Launches With Blue Lagoon Jetta

Jetta GLI gets 2004-inspired makeover

  • Blue Lagoon a rare launch colour for 2004 Jetta GLI

  • Car includes tasteful aero, suspension mods and Recaro seats

For years, Volkswagen has been building what it calls the Enthusiast Fleet, a series of cars that have gotten some extra tuner-style touches to show what you can do you a VW for a few dollars and a few parts. The fleet normally tours car shows around the US, but took last year off for obvious reasons. For 2021, the enthusiast fleet is back and here’s the first in the lineup to be revealed.

It’s a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GTI finished in Deep Black Pearl, but if you’re thinking that colour doesn’t look like what’s in the photos, that’s because it’s not. Volkswagen wrapped this one in Blue Lagoon, one of the launch colours of the Mk IV Jetta GLI back in 2004, and one of the rarest colours of GLI the automaker has made.

To match the colour, Volkswagen sourced a fuel filler door from an original 2004 and went through wrap supplier catalogues until the right hue was picked. It’s Orafol Midnight Blue Metallic if you want to copy it, and VW even wrapped the door jams.

Side skirts and a trunk spoiler from Air Design give the car just the right amount of extra visual flair, while Fifteen52’s front lower spoiler rounds out the look. H&R coil over suspension drop the car to give it the right stance, while BBS 20-inch alloys look a lot like the originals and make this one look just right.

On the inside, Recaro leather front seats add comfort and a wonderfully 1980s appearance, even if they are missing the VW plaid fabric. A shift knob from Black Forest Industries looks perfect sticking out of the center console, and should make your right palm happy.

VW will have more models in the 2021 Enthusiast Fleet, which the automaker expects to send on tour to events around the US.
