Volkswagen Golf Honored as ‘Best Car of the Half Century’

Volkswagen Golf Recognized for Unmatched Longevity and Innovation in the Automotive World

  • Volkswagen Golf recognized at British Motor Show for its legacy and sales success over decades.

  • Award reflects input from judges and attendees celebrating Golf’s 50-year evolution.

  • The Golf surpasses the Beetle, solidifying its status as Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle.

The Volkswagen Golf has been honoured as the ‘Best Car of the Half Century’ by the Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships. The announcement was made at the British Motor Show, coinciding with the Golf’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2024.

The iconic model, which has spanned eight generations and sold over 37 million units, received this recognition from a panel of judges comprising car designers, engineers, industry leaders, motorsport personalities, journalists, and media professionals. The award also incorporated input from show attendees who viewed the latest version of the Golf on display.

John Oates, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and car enthusiast, was among the judges who voted for the Golf. Automotive journalist Mike Rutherford, founder of the awards, emphasized the Golf’s enduring appeal.

“The fact that Volkswagen has been successfully building and selling petrol, diesel, pure-electric and hybrid versions of the Golf around the world for 50 years really does say it all,” Rutherford stated. He added, “Since the very early 1980s, when I bought my first brand new Mk I version, I’ve purchased countless Golfs or run them as company cars.”

2025 Volkswagen Golf R Gets More Power, Fewer Pedals

The Golf’s sales figures have surpassed those of the legendary Beetle, making it Volkswagen’s best-selling car to date. Throughout its production run, the Golf has become synonymous with its vehicle class and has expanded its appeal through popular variants such as the Cabriolet, R, and GTI.

The award was presented by Best Cars of the Year – The New Car World Championships, a not-for-profit organization with offices in the UK, Japan, and South Korea.

The Golf’s recognition as ‘Best Car of the Half Century’ comes as Volkswagen continues to adapt the model to changing market demands and technological advancements. The award acknowledges the Golf’s consistent presence and influence in the automotive industry since its introduction in 1974.

While the Golf’s global popularity remains strong, its availability varies by region. Here, in Canada, Volkswagen no longer offers the standard Golf model. However, enthusiasts can still experience the Golf’s legacy through the high-performance MK8 GTI and R variants.
