Volkswagen ID.4 Wins World Car Award

Selected by jurors from across the globe

  • Takes top spot despite not making final three in any other category

  • Four other World Car Award winners join the ID.4

What’s the best car in the world? The World Car Awards look to award the honour in five classes including different segments and the best designs. Now, narrowed down from three finalists in each of the categories, the winners, awarded in a live-streamed presentation are the Land Rover Defender

World Car Design of the year went to the Land Rover Defender. Finalists included the Honda E as well as the Mazda MX-30. The Defender did a tremendous job of bringing the classic off-roader into the modern era while maintaining classic styling cues like the Alpine windows in the roof and a tail that’s 100 percent Defender.

World Urban Car was awarded to the Honda E. Honda’s retro-styled electric that combines styling that calls back to the Civics of decades past but offers a door to door suite of screens and camera mirrors to help with urban traffic. Finalists included the Honda Jazz and the Toyota Yaris. None of the three is sold in the US or Canada.

2021 World Performance Car winner is the Porche 911 Turbo. The maker has won the class seven times, and the latest Turbo offers up to 640 hp, all-wheel drive, and handling that can compete with anything on the road. The other finalists were the Audi RSQ8 crossover and the Toyota GR Yaris.

The World Luxury Car accolade was awarded to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The S is the Mercedes-Benz flagship designed to offer more of nearly everything while taking away anything bothersome on the road or outside. Runners-up were the Land Rover Defender and Polestar 2.

Finally, 2021 World Car of the Year is the Volkswagen ID.4. One of Volkswagen’s first modern electrics, showcasing an all-new EV platform and offering a range of up to 520 km. Finalists for the overall award included the Toyota Yaris and Honda E.

Nearly 100 jurors from across the globe drive and vote on the vehicles. This year, extra time was needed to make sure the jurors could drive all of the vehicles, or as many as possible. This is the 17th time for the World Car Awards to be given out, with the ceremony normally taking place during the New York auto show.
