VW’s electric MEB platform can do it all.
They are exploring various small car segments.
Volkswagen is only a few days away from officially revealing the potentially game-changing ID.4 compact SUV. It might be game-changing for VW’s as they plan on building more than 26 million EVs before the end of the decade. Although the ID.4 should represent volume sales, a small sports car could do wonders for brand interest.
Think of it as an electric Golf GTI, or more specifically, an electric Scirocco or Corrado. Volkswagen used to build sports cars in the past and according to carbuzz.com, they might be at it again.
Volkswagen shocked the performance and racing car world with the ID.R in the recent past which only earlier this year, sparked stories of an ID.3 R, or the equivalent of what the Golf R is to the regular Golf.
Volkswagen’s CEO Ralf Brandstätter said: “We’re working on concepts for smaller segments. We will discuss it soon. Cars in smaller segments are important and very interesting for us.” When asked about a small electric sports car, he said: “MEB is a very versatile platform. Year by year, we will inform you which kind of cars are possible.”
It’s unclear whether this car will be a coupe or an upgraded hatchback but, as we know, coupes are quickly falling out of favour.
