Volkswagen Reportedly Plans to End Seat Brand by 2029; Cupra Prioritized

Volkswagen Group reportedly plans to phase out Seat by 2029. The Spanish make was founded in 1950.

  • Volkswagen apparently plans to phase out the Seat vehicle brand by the end of 2029.

  • Cupra deliveries rose 33% in 2025 while Seat sales declined 17%.

  • Seat says Volkswagen has discussed transformation plans but has not made final strategic decisions.

Volkswagen Group is considering ending the Seat vehicle brand by the end of 2029, before its 80th birthday, potentially consolidating more of its Spanish automotive operations around Cupra.

According to a report, a confidential document prepared for Volkswagen’s Sept. 3-4 supervisory board meeting outlines an orderly wind-down of Seat. The document calls for customer service and existing obligations to continue after new Seat vehicle operations are phased out.

Seat S.A., however, has not confirmed that such a decision has been approved. The company said Volkswagen Group is developing a transformation plan to improve efficiency and competitiveness but added that “No decisions have been taken at this stage.”

Cupra says North American Launch Remains on Hold, Not Cancelled

Under the proposal, Cupra could take over Seat products, production infrastructure and sales activities where practical. Such a consolidation would let Volkswagen retain useful assets while directing investment toward the faster-growing nameplate. One investment direction for Cupra is VW’s goal of introducing the brand to North America in the future.

Cupra’s development has already transformed its position within the group. Created long ago as Seat’s performance designation before becoming a standalone brand in 2018, Cupra has since received dedicated models and electrification investment. Its upcoming Raval EV is based on Volkswagen Group’s small-EV architecture.

If you recall, Cupra versions of various Seat models once stood as the top performance trim, much like GTI and R were and are at Volkswagen. Some of the most notable models include the fantastic 1996 Ibiza Cupra, the first to carry the name. Other cars included the AWD 2000 Leon Cupra and follow-up 2003 Cupra R, an Audi S3 of the time with Spanish flair.

Between 2018 and 2025, the two brands have been on sharply different sales trajectories. In 2025 alone, Seat and Cupra together delivered a record 586,300 vehicles, but the number is only part of the story. Cupra deliveries increased 33%, while Seat volume declined 17%, an unfortunate trend for the 76-year-old carmaker. Volkswagen thus sees potential for Cupra to eventually reach annual sales of between 500,000 and 600,000 vehicles, without Seat’s help.

Founded in Spain in 1950 and controlled by Volkswagen since the 1980s, Seat does not currently offer a dedicated EV model – they belonging to Cupra. Volkswagen has nevertheless continued investing in its existing lineup, including recent updates to the Ibiza and Arona.

The reported plan arrives during a major Volkswagen Group cost and manufacturing review. Management is seeking substantial reductions in production capacity and employment as the automaker responds to weaker business conditions in China, tariffs and increased competition.

For Seat, the immediate situation remains unresolved and unconfirmed.
