Golf R in camo with rally legends behind the wheel
Expect the hottest Golf launch later this summer
Volkswagen is taking the Updated Golf R racing. The public premiere of the car is at an ice race in Austria with racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck and six-time World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson. Part of the celebration of 50 years of the Golf.
It’s our first look at the updated 2025 Volkswagen Golf R, even if it’s under camouflage. The updates are about what we expected after seeing the base model and GTI. That means a new radar sensor in the grille, some new wheels, and what looks like a new rear spoiler.
While the GTI picks up 20 hp to make 261, VW hasn’t said anything about Golf R power output. It will probably have to beat the 315 hp of the current car, because the lighter (FWD) GTI would be nipping right at its heels.
The main action at the Ice Race in Zell am See was the other Volkswagens being hustled around the circuit. The new Golf in all of its variants, including hybrid and GTE electric models, did laps. So did a range of other Vee Dubs, including an original Golf GTI from 1975 and a rally-prepped version, along with a 2002 R32 model.
“It was great fun to sit in the brand-new Golf for the first time. I can only say that even though the Golf R has not yet been revealed, there is a true sports car under the camouflage that fans of the R brand can already look forward to,” said six-time world rallycross title winner Kristoffersson.
Expect the car’s full reveal later this year.
