Volkswagen To Introduce ID.3 R Within 5 Years

According to a recent interview by a Volkswagen executive, the carmaker will launch a R version of the ID.3.

Volkswagen’s new era started earlier this week with the launch of the first member of the ID. family, the ID.3. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Volkswagen ID.3 is an all-electric hatchback.

Shortly after the launch, the British magazine Autocar sat down with Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales for an interview.

Stackmann told Autocar that a performance version of the ID.3 could possibly soon be in the works. This R version will be a real performance car, just like the current R, and will feature four-wheel drive, of course.

“If there is a future for R it must be electric, it’s very simple. It won’t be next year, because we need to define what R is in the electric world,” said Stackmann to the magazine.

Dr. Frank Welsch, Chief Development Officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars also chimed in by adding “we should have the same as cars such as the Golf, the GTI and R. People like performance and I’m sure people will love performance in ID cars too.”

When can we expect this high-performance Volkswagen ID.3 R, well according to Welsch “In under five years is okay.“
