It will slot below the Tiguan.
Was potentially to be called Tarek but it’s unlikely now.
The official reveal to take place on October 13th.
Rumours of a smaller SUV joining Volkswagen’s North American lineup are now confirmed. They’ve just revealed a teaser image of the SUV that will slot itself below that of the current large-compact Tiguan.
If there were doubts that Volkswagen was planning to bring more SUVs to the continent, well they’ve now officially been put to rest. In the last year, and up to the end of 2020, VW will have introduced no fewer than three new SUVs, from the Atlas Cross Sport, the ID.4, and now, a new compact one. As as a side note, we can probably blame it for the Golf’s demise in North America.
Nearly a year and a half ago, we reported that Volkswagen of Argentina had let slip that a new small SUV was coming for our market and it was to be named Tarek, which stands for “path” or “way”. The name remains unconfirmed but it is our understanding that it will not be called Tarek…
This new little ute will be built on the MQB platform, same for the Tiguan, however will be a full 10 inches (25.4 cm) shorter than it. Powering the Tarek could be the turbocharged 1.4-litre engine currently found in the Jetta and Golf. The Tiguan’s turbo-2.0-litre could also do the job. Both FWD and AWD will undoubtedly be offered.
“We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception.”
The official reveal will take place next month, on October 13. We’ll get all the juicy details then, with the possible exception of price however we think it will be close to the outgoing MK7 Golf’s.
