Volkswagen Will Not Build The ID. Buggy And ID. Ruggdzz EVs

Volkswagen’s decision to scrap plans for these playful EVs comes from the top

  • Volkswagen will concentrate on more mainstream products, for now.

  • While the Buggy’s out, the Ruggdzz might have a chance in the future.

Volkswagen’s been in the news quite a bit over the last few years or so for its all-new ID. family of EVs. Part of the interest in the new EVs comes from VW’s decision to reinvent old classics like the Type 2 Bus (ID. Buzz) and toying around with the idea of cool niche products like the ID. Buggy and ID. Ruggdzz.

While the ID. Buzz is a go for 2022, the ID. Buggy and ID. Ruggdzz will sadly not make it to production. Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter was the messenger, as reported by Road Show, and he confirmed that the electric dune buggy will never make it to a production facility. The ID. Ruggdzz, a more off-road dedicated SUV about the size of a Tiguan, may potentially have a future, in the distant future.

However, we think “never say never applies here. Rumours that the Beetle is not completely dead and could return as an EV in the future still echo on the internet. The more EVs VW produces on its platforms, the more economies of scale they gain and, the more they will stand out as a maker of cool niche EV vehicles.
