Home charging is a key factor in making EVs practical and economical to use.
While owning and charging an electric vehicle is now pretty easy for drivers who own a home or have access to a private driveway, it remains more complex for those living in apartments and condos.
Indeed, most older residential buildings aren’t equipped with EV chargers, and retrofitting them can prove very expensive.
This leaves residents who drive an electric car no choice other than to charge at work or by using public chargers.
This makes EVs far less convenient to use than they should be, and also significantly more expensive, since public chargers are much more costly to use than residential units.
Therefore, most electric vehicles are sold to homeowners and most people living in apartments and condos keep buying combustion-powered vehicles, even if they would have liked to make the transition to an EV.
To solve this, Voltpost, a company known for making EV chargers that can be installed on lampposts and telephone poles, has developed a new level 2 charger that claims to reduce installation costs by about 70%.

To do so, the company’s new product, part of its Air lineup of chargers specifically made for retrofitting operations, can be mounted on a building’s walls or ceiling with minimal work.
The wall mount model is intended for drivers who park next to their building, while the ceiling mount model is made for those who park in shared garages, such as buildings with basement-level parking.
The wall mount device can also be installed on a pedestal bolted into the ground, which can bring charging options to curbside parking spots away from other suitable infrastructure.
To take up as little space as possible, this charger features a retractable cable that also prevents other people from tripping over it in shared parking structures.
While installers will still need to run high-voltage cables to these units, Voltpost says the savings will come from not having to dig up entire parking lots and remove sections of pavement to run the wires.
These lower installation costs could therefore encourage more building owners and condo boards to approve the addition of EV chargers in their buildings, thus making it more convenient and more economical for more drivers to choose an electric vehicle.
