Volvo Adds a Touch of SUV and Fastback to Its Latest ES90 Sedan

The new electric Volvo ES90 is not coming to Canada.

  • A 800V system is integrated in the ES90.

  • Range reaches 700 km in the WLTP cycle.

Volvo has finally revealed its latest EV, the ES90. And the first impression is clear: the Swedish division’s new creation is a happy blend of sedan, SUV and even fastback hatchback. What’s more, a little like the Polestar 2 from the other Swedish brand, the new ES90 sits on imposing rims (ranging from 20 to 22 inches in diameter) and has the ground clearance of a utility vehicle.

At the front, the signature styling of the recent EX90 and EX30 is applied, with Thor’s hammer-shaped LED daytime running lights and the brand’s badge in the center of the front panel. The silhouette is ironically like that of an SUV coupe, but with a longer wheelbase. Also worth mentioning, the door handles are well integrated into the line for optimum aerodynamics.

At the rear, as already shown in shots leaked before the official presentation, the LED taillamps adopt a “C” signature, while in the rear window, further red LEDs add to the sedan’s light signature. With that fastback shape behind it, the ES90 looks more like a crossover with that chunky shape. To say the least, this new electric sedan doesn’t really look like anything else on the road… apart from the brand’s other models, of course.

Inside, the ES90 favors comfort and a typically Volvo ambience. The sedan’s very long wheelbase – thanks to the electric architecture – provides plenty of space for passengers in both rows. Unsurprisingly, several ambient lighting theme options are available, as are the upholstery options for the sedan. The panoramic roof can also be ordered with electrochromic glass to protect against US rays or not, depending on the mood inside the cabin. Finally, a four-zone air-conditioning system with air purifier ensures a clean, allergen-free cabin.

The uncluttered dashboard is nonetheless home to this vertically positioned central screen, the surface of which reaches 14.5 inches. There’s also another nine-inch screen behind the steering wheel for other useful information, and even a head-up display. The infotainment system, meanwhile, is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit platform and retains its integrated Google technology. To facilitate parking maneuvers, a three-dimensional 360-degree camera is also available.

The new ES90 sedan is based on the automaker’s SPA2 platform, the same used for the EX90 and Polestar’s 3 crossover. However, the ES90 is the first to benefit from an 800-volt electric system, which allows very rapid charging times, with the car recovering 300 km of range in just 10 minutes when plugged into an appropriate terminal of course. The range announced by Volvo (according to the WLTP cycle) is 700 km. This distance will be lower when the sedan gets evaluated by North American government agencies.

The Volvo ES90 can be equipped with a single engine mounted on the rear axle, with an estimated 329 hp and 354 ft-lb of torque. An intermediate two-engine option boosts power to 442 hp and torque to 494 ft-lb, but that’s not all, as Volvo has also prepared a high-performance version with two engines and 670 hp and 635 ft-lb of torque for a 0-96 km/h time of 3.9 seconds. Not bad for a sedan whose primary mission is to transport its passengers in the greatest comfort.

For the time being, Volvo will concentrate its efforts on the European market, with the arrival of the ES90 in North America expected sometime in 2026. Volvo must also reveal a revised version of its S90 ICE-powered sedan to meet the needs of every customer.
