Volvo Evaluates Larger Hybrid SUV to Compete in Full-Size Segment

Volvo explores new large SUV flagship for North America and China, potentially built in South Carolina.

  • Volvo studying the possibility of new SUV above XC90 to meet full-size hybrid demand in North America and China.

  • CEO confirms interest in larger three-row hybrids as range concerns for EVs persist.

  • New model could share platform with XC90 or Zeekr 9X and be built in South Carolina.

Volvo is evaluating the launch of a new full-size hybrid SUV positioned above the current XC90, as part of a strategy to meet rising demand for larger three-row vehicles. The potential flagship model would enter the F-segment SUV category, competing with the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, as well as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, and others.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson said the company is considering such a model but has not made a final decision. “Bigger SUVs are something we’re looking into,” Samuelsson said. “Especially in China and the US, the real three-row SUV is a growing segment and an interesting segment.”

It’s also a money-making segment that others have or are considering. Audi’s been working on a Q9 for seemingly ever, while BMW has hinted that an XL X7 is a possibility. Lexus is already in the game with the LX. Even Genesis is looking into the category with the X Gran Equator concept.

The Swedish automaker currently offers the XC90 and EX90 as its largest models, both available with three rows. However, Samuelsson indicated that consumers in core markets are likely to favour hybrid powertrains in the near term, citing battery weight and range limitations as challenges for full-electric vehicles in this size class.

He also hinted that any future flagship model could be assembled at Volvo’s plant in Charleston, South Carolina. “If we start building a car there, it will be a very attractive car for the US market and US customers,” he said.

The use of the SPA2 platform, currently shared by the XC90 and electric EX90, remains a likely option for the new model. Volvo may also leverage its ties with other Geely-owned brands in the development process. One candidate is the Zeekr 9X, a luxury SUV measuring 5.24 metres in length, which is significantly larger than the XC90. The 9X is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with three electric motors for a combined output of 1,350 horsepower. We can assume that the final product will sport considerably less power.

Volvo has yet to confirm platform choice or timeline for a decision. A model name is also missing. We believe Volvo should reintroduce its PV nomenclature. There are plenty of options: 444, 544, 800, and so on.
