Volvo EX90 Electric SUV Deliveries to Finally Begin This Month

The EX90 Marks a New Chapter for Volvo in the Electric SUV Market

  • Initial deliveries of the EX90 begin this month, expanding to more markets by 2025.

  • The SUV boasts cutting-edge technology, including bi-directional charging and NVIDIA-based systems.

  • Volvo’s Charleston plant can produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually, reflecting their electric vehicle commitment.

Volvo Cars said that initial deliveries of its all-electric EX90 SUV will commence by the end of September. The first batch of vehicles is currently en route to retailers in the United States and Europe.

The Swedish automaker plans to gradually expand deliveries to additional markets between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.

Production of the EX90 began earlier this year at Volvo’s manufacturing facility near Charleston, South Carolina. The plant has an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles. Volvo invested in extensive upgrades to the facility, including renovations to the body shop and paint shop, as well as the addition of a battery pack production line.

The EX90 features a core in-car computer system based on the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, which integrates with the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies and Volvo-developed software. This system manages key vehicle functions including safety, infotainment, and battery management.

Safety equipment on the EX90 includes radars, cameras, and a lidar system supplied by Luminar. The vehicle is equipped with 5G connectivity to enable regular over-the-air software updates.

Volvo states the EX90 has a driving range of up to 600 kilometres. It is also the first Volvo model designed for bi-directional charging capabilities.

The launch of the EX90 was originally scheduled for late 2023 but was delayed to allow for additional software development and testing.

Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars CEO, recently completed a 950-kilometre road trip across three U.S. states in an EX90. “After driving it through various conditions and road surfaces, I only have positive memories,” Rowan said.
