Volvo’s Flagship XC90 Gets a Technological and Sustainable Upgrade

Introducing the revamped XC90: Greater electric efficiency, modernized design, and cutting-edge safety features

  • Updated XC90 boasts over 70 km electric range for daily commutes under WLTP standards.

  • Enhanced safety features and modern design reflect Volvo’s commitment to electrification.

  • Production begins in late 2024, with first deliveries expected by year-end.

Volvo Cars unveiled a substantial update to its flagship XC90 SUV, introducing improvements in electric range, design, and technology. The new model, set to begin production in late 2024, aims to strengthen Volvo’s position in the premium hybrid SUV market.

The updated XC90 plug-in hybrid now offers over 70 kilometres of fully electric range on a single charge, according to WLTP testing standards. This enhancement allows many drivers to complete their daily commutes using only electric power. Volvo reports that approximately half of the distance covered by their latest plug-in hybrid vehicles is driven on pure electric power.

For longer journeys, the XC90‘s hybrid powertrain combines with a petrol engine to extend the total range beyond 800 kilometres. The vehicle also provides the option to use combined petrol and electric power for constant all-wheel drive and off-road capabilities.

Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, stated, “Whether it’s comfort, space, luxury, versatility or hybrid efficiency you look for, the XC90 delivers on all accounts.”

The exterior design of the XC90 has been refreshed to reflect Volvo’s transition towards electrification, incorporating elements from their fully electric models. Inside, the SUV features a redesigned interior with a larger, high-resolution central touchscreen. This new interface introduces Volvo’s latest user experience, previously seen in their EX90 and EX30 electric vehicles, and supports over-the-air software updates.

Safety remains a priority for Volvo, with the XC90 equipped with an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive suite of active safety features. These include systems to prevent lane departure, avoid collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians, and mitigate the risk of running off the road.

The XC90’s ride comfort has been improved with an enhanced suspension system. An optional air suspension is available, offering adjustable ride height for various driving conditions and terrains. Additional insulation has been added to reduce wind and road noise.

The interior redesign focuses on contemporary Scandinavian design, featuring a more horizontal dashboard shape and decorative panels made from premium recycled materials. Practical improvements include additional storage space in the centre console and a repositioned wireless phone charger.

Volvo continues to offer mild-hybrid petrol variants alongside the plug-in hybrid model. The B5 and B6 versions feature a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator, which Volvo claims can reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15% in real-world driving conditions.

Orders for the new Volvo XC90 are now open, with production scheduled to commence in late 2024. First customer deliveries are expected to begin around the end of the year.
