TCR is a more potent version of the 2021 VW Golf GTI
Engine may deliver 296 horsepower
TCR slots between base GTI and Golf R
The Volkswagen Golf GTI will arrive in North America as a 2022 model a year after it arrives in Europe. We recently learned that track performance in the new MK8 GTI will be improved over the previous generation, and now we get a video of the most potent GTI around lapping the famed Nürburgring.
The VW Golf GTI TCR is rumored to have 296 horsepower, 54 more ponies than the new MK8 Golf GTI, but still less than the Golf R’s expected 329 horsepower in the next generation. We have yet to see the MK8 Golf R.
The new-generation GTI sports a brand-new design, a more refined interior with larger digital screens and controls, and an improved suspension and chassis. It also gets more advanced driving modes, improved steering, better braking.
As we learned yesterday during a new GTI presentation with Volkswagen, the hatchback was designed to perform better in every respect with better drivability and improved track performance. This TCR lapping the most famous track in the world certainly looks quite comfortable.
There’s no word yet on whether we will see the TCR version in North America, but VW has said there were discussions ongoing. We could also see the GTE plug-in make its way over here.
The GTI and Golf R will be the only Golf models offered in North America while Canadians may still get the MK8 Golf TSi. Again, talks are ongoing at Volkswagen.
