Why Is The New Mazda CX-30 Called The CX-30?

Mazda’s latest addition to its growing line of SUVs will be called the CX-30 and not CX-4 or even CX-7. We wanted to know why.

Only a few days ago, we reported on the unveiling of the 2020 Mazda CX-30 at the Geneva Motor Show. Within minutes of publishing the story on the site, the amount of interest in the new CX-30 swelled.

Because we serve you, our reader, we put together a competitor to the Mazda CX-30 list to help you gauge what segment it fits in.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 did leave us wondering why it will actually be called CX-30 instead of CX-4 or CX-7. In order to try and find out more, we reached out to Mazda Canada for more insight on the name.

Chuck Reimer, Manager, Product Communications at Mazda Canada had this to say:

“Let me switch to corporate speak for a second to answer your question about the name. Since we already have a product in another market called CX-4, this had to be something else. It’s the first new crossover from our new generation of vehicles, and with the elevated level of design, refinement, and craftsmanship in this vehicle, we thought it fitting to give it a new name that sits at the top of our naming hierarchy.”

As an FYI, we were talking about our kids, hence the “Let me switch to corporate speak” at the beginning of the answer.

Now, about the answer; we’re just as confused now as we were before. If the CX-30 sits between the CX-3 and CX-5 size-wise, why does it sit at the top of the naming hierarchy? The CX-9 is the current flagship SUV at Mazda so does that mean the next generation CX-9 will become the CX-90? The CX-5 the CX-50? Will there be a hybrid CX-75 that’s nearly as large as the CX-9 but with only two rows of seats (and not a CX-8 because it’s sold elsewhere on the planet?)

Either way, we think this is the beginning of a completely new naming structure for Mazda SUVs with gasoline versions getting a “0” and hybrids earning a “5” at the end of the name…

It’s fun to speculate but we’ll report back to you when we figure it all out, or extract it from Mazda reps.
