Yangwang U9 Xtreme sets 6:59 Nürburgring lap, fastest EV supercar time to date.
German driver Moritz Kranz piloted the car after months of circuit-specific testing.
The limited-run vehicle uses 3,000 PS quad-motor system and 1200V architecture.
An electric hypercar built by Chinese automaker BYD’s performance division, called Yangwang, has set a new category lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the 20.8-kilometre circuit in 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds.
The time, recorded on August 22, 2025, by the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, is the fastest posted by an electric vehicle in the Nürburgring’s super sports car category. It also marks the first time a fully electric vehicle in this class has recorded a sub-seven-minute lap. The previous record was held by the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, posting a verified lap time of 7:04.957.
German racing driver Moritz Kranz, a veteran of GT competition with extensive experience at the Nordschleife, completed the lap. According to the company, Kranz has completed close to 10,000 laps at the circuit.
The U9 Xtreme is equipped with four electric motors producing a combined output of more than 3,000 PS (more than 2,960 hp) and is based on a 1200-volt electric architecture. Its power-to-weight ratio is rated at 1,217 PS (1,200 hp) per tonne. The car features an intelligent body-control system designed to manage dynamic loads under circuit conditions.
The Nürburgring attempt followed months of on-track testing by Yangwang engineers, beginning in mid-2024. The company stated that cooling, braking, and chassis systems were revised based on data collected during this period. Track-specific components include a redesigned thermal management system, carbon-ceramic braking using titanium alloy components, and semi-slick Giti tires co-developed with the manufacturer.
This same vehicle previously recorded a claimed top speed of 496.22 km/h during closed-course testing at ATP Papenburg in Germany earlier in the summer.
Only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme will be produced. It is part of a limited-series program under Yangwang, BYD’s luxury sub-brand.
