Zeekr, a subsidiary of Geely Group, has unveiled its contender to challenge the dominance of the Tesla Model S Plaid in the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) market. The new model, named Zeekr 001 FR, is a powerful machine that aims to combine impressive power, agility, and rapid charging capabilities.

The Zeekr 001 FR is based on the Zeekr 001 mid-size liftback, which recently entered the European market. However, the 001 FR takes the performance game to an entirely new level. While the regular Zeekr 001 offers 536 horsepower from a dual-motor powertrain, the 001 FR adopts a quad-motor setup with four silicon carbide electric motors, producing an astounding 1,265 horsepower.

The Zeekr 001 FR’s acceleration is remarkable, claiming to reach 62 miles per hour from a standstill in just 2.07 seconds, though this is stated to be “in a rolling start scenario.” This suggests a possible rollout involved in the measurement. In comparison, the Tesla Model S Plaid achieves 0 to 60 mph in 1.99 seconds with a one-foot rollout. It’s also notable that the 1,234-horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire claims a 0-60 time of 1.89 seconds without mentioning a rollout. While the details of Zeekr’s rollout length are undisclosed, these three EVs appear to be closely matched in terms of acceleration.

Beyond acceleration, the Zeekr 001 FR offers advanced torque vectoring capabilities due to its distributed quad e-drive design and proprietary software and hardware technologies. This design allows maximum power distribution to each wheel and quick power adjustments, ensuring a dynamic driving experience. Notably, the Zeekr 001 FR can even perform tank turns, much like the Rivian R1T, further showcasing its agility.

Charging efficiency is another highlight of the Zeekr 001 FR. Equipped with a 100-kilowatt-hour CATL Qilin battery pack and an enhanced 800-volt electrical system, the vehicle can charge from 10 to 80 percent in only 15 minutes, enhancing practicality and reducing downtime during long trips.
With an aggressive body kit featuring lightweight carbon fiber components, the Zeekr 001 FR optimizes aerodynamics and downforce. This performance-oriented EV also integrates a satellite communications pack and unique interior designs.

The Zeekr 001 FR is scheduled for delivery in China starting October 2023, with production capped at 99 units monthly. Pricing is anticipated to be above 1 million yuan (approximately $137,750), positioning it competitively against the Tesla Model S Plaid, which begins around $147,000 in China. While it’s uncertain if the Zeekr 001 FR will be available outside China, its entry into the market signals a new contender in the high-performance EV segment.
