Volvo to Launch First EV Sedan, ES90, in March

Swedish automaker set to launch first battery-powered sedan

  • ES90 will feature fastback design, single- and dual-motor options, with range between 483-644 kilometres.

  • New flagship sedan expands Volvo’s electric portfolio, targeting China’s premium EV market.

  • ES90 utilizes SPA2 platform, benefiting from technological advancements in EX90 development.

Volvo Cars will introduce its first battery-powered sedan, the ES90, in March, with production scheduled to begin later this year at the company’s Torslanda factory in Sweden. According to Automotive News, European markets are expected to see the vehicle by late 2025, while U.S. availability may follow in 2027.

The ES90 will feature a fastback design and surpass the current gasoline-powered S90 in size, as revealed by a dealer who spoke with Automotive News. Volvo plans to offer the electric vehicle in both single- and dual-motor configurations, with an estimated driving range between 483 to 644 kilometres.

This new flagship sedan will expand Volvo’s full-electric portfolio, which currently includes three SUVs, a crossover, and a luxury van. The ES90 is anticipated to perform well in China’s premium electric vehicle market, a sentiment echoed by Volvo CEO Jim Rowan.

“I think if you’re in China right now and you’re just offering BEVs and you’re in the low end of the market that is a tough place to be,” said Rowan in an interview with Automotive News Europe.

The ES90 will be the final model to utilize Volvo’s second-generation scalable product architecture (SPA2), which is also employed in the EX90 and Polestar 3 models. Volvo plans to transition to a third-generation platform, SPA3, beginning with the full-electric EX60 midsize SUV.

Despite delays in the EX90’s launch due to software issues, the technological advancements from its development are expected to benefit the ES90. Volvo has outlined plans to introduce a new model and a mid-cycle refresh annually for the next eight years.

The current SPA platform, introduced in 2014, underpins six models in Volvo’s 90 and 60 series. It will continue to be used in the refreshed XC90 and upcoming plug-in hybrids, which are expected to offer extended electric ranges exceeding the current 70 kilometres.
