The 2027 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon Gain 40 Horsepower Thanks to a Revised Engine

  • The 2027 Canyon and Colorado will use the same 2,7L TurboMax engine as the Silverado and Sierra.

  • This engine has been updated for the new generation of half-ton pickups.

  • The new TurboMax will generate 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque.

While the big news from General Motors is the arrival of a new generation of full-size, half-ton pickups this fall, its smaller truck offerings also have something to boast about.

Indeed, the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will gain a more powerful engine for the 2027 model year, courtesy of those new full-sizers.

While the only engine offered in both the Canyon and the Colorado remains the 2,7L TurboMax turbocharged four-cylinder, it has been extensively updated for use in the new Silverado and Sierra.

Rather than manufacturing two versions of this engine, one for the smaller trucks and another for the larger ones, General Motors opted to give its mid-size models a significant power boost.

While the 2026 Canyon and Colorado are not lacking in power with their standard output of 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, the 2027 models will be able to offer 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque thanks to the new TurboMax, codenamed L4B.

Compared to the current L3B, this new version of the boosted four-cylinder employs a new turbocharger, a revised fuel injection system, redesigned pistons, and improved active thermal management systems.

In addition to increasing output, these changes are also purported to improve fuel efficiency, at least in the Sierra and Silverado. We will be able to see if this carries over to the Canyon and Colorado once the 2027 models arrive later in 2026 or early in 2027.

While the automaker hasn’t confirmed any figures regarding the 2027 Canyon and Colorado, this information is based on internal order guides from General Motors to its dealerships. These same documents show a towing capacity that remains unchanged at 7,700 pounds (3,493 kilograms).

It will also be interesting to see if the new TurboMax engine in the midsize GM trucks trades its 8-speed automatic transmission for a new 10-speed unit, as is the case in the 2027 full-size pickups.

More details about the 2027 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon should be released over the coming months as these models start making their way to North American dealerships.
