Audi R8 Returning as Electric Supercar: Report

Audi's next R8 could be 1,400 e-tron

  • An e-tron R8 is on the way

  • Could make 1,400 hp or even higher

The Audi R8 is dead, but it might not be out forever. According to a new report, Audi will bring the car back as a 1,400 hp electric with even more supercar looks. L’Automobile reported on the next-generation Audi supercar and brought renderings to show what it might look like. Here are some of the most important things we’ve learned.

A next-gen Audi R8 will ride on the Volkswagen Group SSP platform. The platform is expected to launch in 2026 and replace both VW’s current EV platforms but also the company’s gas variants. Its flexibilty is what would allow for models like this supercar, as well as sedans and SUVs.

Audi’s last electric super-show car, the PB18, which was revealed in 2018, had three electric motors totaling 775 hp. With modern motor tech, the report says that power could more than double for the new car. Promising 1,400hp or a figure well over. Encroaching on Bugatti territory.

The car is expected to have proportions in-line with the gas R8s. A low and sleek Audi supercar design, but with shorter overgangs than before. The report hints at design borrowed from the PB18 including the massive and adjustable rear wing.

What’s not clear is the name. R8 e-tron is the likely choice, but the report says that it’s not certain if Audi will use that name or something all-new. We’re fans of R8 e-tron, of course.
