General Motors Expected To Shut Down Operations In Oshawa, Ont.

Apparently, General Motors Canada will be making an important announcement later today, Monday November 26th . According to CTV News and their sources, GM will be shutting down all operations in Oshawa, Ont. come December 2019.

Nearly 3,000 people hold jobs at GM in the small city just east of Toronto. While these salaried jobs and union positions may be lost, the effect will be far wider reaching as local suppliers will also feel the brunt of this move. Part suppliers especially are likely to have to follow suit and make cuts of their own.

The reasoning behind this decision appears to be GM’s desire to restructure on a global scale. Canada will not be alone in suffering the aftermath as a number of plants in the United States are also expected to get the axe.

Unifor, which represents the union position, will hold a meeting with GM to find out more. Back in 2016, in the course of contract negotiations, GM and Unifor made commitments and this decision would go against the agreed upon terms.

We’ll update you as we learn more.
